even though i was aware of earl wilds declining health, i still was no quite prepared to read of his death in the january 23 issue of the los angeles times. the pianist died in palm springs california, where he spent part of each year before moving there permanently a few years ago. however, his appearances in the los angeles area were infrequent. i last heard him play in la 15 years ago in a recital marking his 80th birthday. i recall that recital included a hair raising performance of liszts dante sonata. the la times obituary refers to him as the elder statesman of american piano virtuosos who was often called the last of the great romantic pianists. wild had a vast repertoire which included music from the baroque to the 20th century. however, he became pigeonholed as a pianist who could only be taken seriously in virtuoso show pieces. hopefully, his recorded legacy will eventually reverse that opinion. wild was a master piano transcriber, a trait held in common with many other great romantic pianists. i had hoped that i would be able to hear wild play once again. we have the recordings, but its not quite the same.

as you know, public school education in alabama is in trouble. in the last few weeks, the school boards have had to lay off hundreds of teachers. the problem is proration of the school budget due to a decrease in income from taxes. according to alabama citizens for reform of the alabama consution, public schools will always suffer from flaws that our consution has written into tax system. it seems that no one wants increased taxes. i count myself among those who support public education and yet i think we can increase our support for education without raising them. to that end i approached wlrh, our local public radio station at uah and bobby milk produced this all things considered radio segment. i became an activist for education last fall when i started teaching autocad at the huntsville city schools center for technology. my friend sam honey and i taught s one night a week. in preparation for that i visited the school in the daytime and fell in love with what is going on there. few things have gotten me as excited as my experience walking around the facility. i love it when i find places in this town that are hidden gems amp the students and faculty at that facility are definitely a precious jewel. i intend to use my youtube channel to promote the hct and technical education in general. i would appreciate your comments.

this shot is from just outside the village on the north side. i'm about 20 feet from the seawall on a boardwalk. well, standing on the cement side of a bench on the boardwalk. at the very beginning of this clip, you see the community centre. and yes, that was a rather large beaver at the left. at the half-way point, you can see more of false creek and then downtown vancouver, the plaza of nations, bc place, burrard inlet and science world. and more beaver. the category for this video is people amp blogs because approximately 1 4 of the housing here will be for people with low incomes. originally it was supposed to be much higher, but the cost of the village became greater than expected, so some of the low income apartments had to be given up to help cover the costs. oh well. poor people can still come and visit. -
