new quake-monitoring network for pacific coast japan is to set up a sophisticated earthquake-monitoring network on the pacific seabed off central and western part of the country from this month, to step up the speed and accuracy of quake warnings. the monitoring network is to prepare for major quakes that the government predicts have a 60 to 70 percent probability of hitting japan within 30 years. the government says such quakes will likely hit a wide region mainly along the pacific coast from central to western japan. major quakes have repeatedly struck the region every 90 to 150 years. the new network is to be established jointly by the science ministry and the japan agency for marine-earth science and technology. they showed to the media on wednesday devices to be installed by next march in 20 monitoring points on the seabed off the kii peninsula, western japan. one of the devices is an ultra sensitive water-pressure gauge that detects offshore tsunami. it can detect tsunami up to 20 minutes earlier than the existing domestic monitoring network. a high-performance seismometer to be installed on the seabed is expected to help issue earlier quake warnings, as it can detect a jolt 10 seconds earlier than land monitors. data will be sent regularly via underwater cables to the meteorological agency and other research insutions. the ministry plans to expand the network westward after the next fiscal year. project leader yoshiyuki kaneda says the new monitoring network will help japan to forecast the scale and timing of possible huge quakes, such as the one that recently hit chile causing a major tsunami. 2010 03 03 18:51jst jst: utc9hrs. nhk.or
