mcdonald's corp. nyse:mcd chief executive jim skinner said that he will defend the fast food chain's use of toys to promote happy meals to children, amidst a consumer advocacy group's threat to sue mcdonald's over the issue. skinner penned a letter july 6th to the washington-based center for science in the public interest's cspi executive director criticizing the consumer group's "inflammatory rhetoric" that putting toys in mcdonald's happy meals is illegal, deceptive and hooks children. "cspi is wrong in its ertions and frivolous in its legal threats," wrote skinner. "cspi's twisted characterization of mcdonald's as 'the stranger in the playground handing out candy to children' is an insult to every one of our franchisees and employees around the world." mcdonald's has been criticized in the past for targeting children through marketing, and cspi officials said in june that the group would sue the fast food giant within 30 days unless it stops promoting happy meal sales through toy-related marketing. officials from the advocacy group cite that toy-related promotions violate consumer protection laws in texas, machusetts, new jersey, california and the district of columbia, the wall street journal reports. shares of mcdonald's were trading up 1.4 earlier wednesday at s67.01, and continue to trade up 1.16 at s66.88.
