mcdonald's corp. nyse:mcd chief executive jim skinner said that he will defend the fast food chain's use of toys to promote happy meals to children, amidst a consumer advocacy group's threat to sue mcdonald's over the issue. skinner penned a letter july 6th to the washington-based center for science in the public interest's cspi executive director criticizing the consumer group's "inflammatory rhetoric" that putting toys in mcdonald's happy meals is illegal, deceptive and hooks children. "cspi is wrong in its ertions and frivolous in its legal threats," wrote skinner. "cspi's twisted characterization of mcdonald's as 'the stranger in the playground handing out candy to children' is an insult to every one of our franchisees and employees around the world." mcdonald's has been criticized in the past for targeting children through marketing, and cspi officials said in june that the group would sue the fast food giant within 30 days unless it stops promoting happy meal sales through toy-related marketing. officials from the advocacy group cite that toy-related promotions violate consumer protection laws in texas, machusetts, new jersey, california and the district of columbia, the wall street journal reports. shares of mcdonald's were trading up 1.4 earlier wednesday at s67.01, and continue to trade up 1.16 at s66.88.

bp oil spill - nasa time line space view amp wildlife effected the spill threatens environmental disaster due to factors such as petroleum toxicity and oxygen depletion. more than 400 species live in the islands and marshlands at risk, including the endangered kemp's ridley turtle. in the national refuges most at risk, about 34000 birds have been counted, including gulls, pelicans, roseate spoonbills, egrets, terns, and blue herons. a comprehensive inventory of offshore species in the gulf of mexico completed in 2009 counted 15700 species of sea life, with those in the area of the oil spill numbering 8332 plant and animal species, including more than 1200 fish, 200 bird, 1400 mollusk, 1500 crustacean, 4 sea turtle, and 29 marine mammal species. as of june 25, there had been 1539 dead animals found in the spill zone including 1074 dead birds, 417 sea turtles, and 48 dolphins and other mammals, with some reports of dolphins being spotted running low on food, and 'acting drunk' apparently from effects of the spill.there may be other dead animals that go unfound. according to the us fish and wildlife service, it has not yet been determined if these animals were killed by the oil. samantha joye of the university of georgia indicated that the oil could harm fish directly, and microbes used to consume the oil would also add to the reduction of oxygen in the water, with effects being felt higher up the food chain. according to joye, it could take the ecosystem years and possibly ltbgt...lt bgt
