the timing and movement of large rock and soil failure events can be tied to storm cycles but are also subject to other physical phenomena like storm surges, wildfires, earthquakes, and human activities that change the balance of nature. this talk explains debris flow and landslide occurrences and how to prevent them. subjects will include la conchita laguna beach, point fermin, rancho palos verdes and the slide mes of san onofre state beach. john h. foster, ph.d., is a professor of engineering geology at california state university, fullerton. in addition to investigations in stratigraphic and sedimentologic studies, dr. foster has also served as expert witness in several local and regional court cases involving remedial methods of rock falls in silverado canyon and rancho palos verdes homeowner property rights in the area of an ancient landslide.
